Mile in My Shoes 2010 Facts
What: Kokomo Rescue Missions (KRM) 9th annual
winter walk, one mile in length, a round trip from KRM
Headquarters to Open Arms, the missions shelter for
homeless women and children. Rest, refreshments and tours are
provided at Open Arms. Each walker receives a free t-shirt.
Who: Walkers raise at least $50 each. Teams may have
up to 20 walkers. The Golden Sneaker Trophy is awarded to the top
fundraising team. 2008's winner was Zion Tabernacle, raising over
$4,275.50. There were 102 teams registered and approximately 800
people walked in 2008. The event has captured attention at
missions in other cities. In 2008 there were simultaneous events
in Muncie and Marion.
Where: Kokomo Rescue Mission Headquarters is
located at 321 W. Mulberry Street. Open Arms is at 929 N. Main
Street. The route for the walk is from KRM north on Washington
Street to Havens Street, east to Main Street, south to Open Arms.
The return route is south on Main Street to Mulberry Street and
west to the Mission.
When: Saturday, February 13, 2010 ~ Begin Walking: Between 8:30am - 10:30am
Benefits: Proceeds will benefit Open Arms,
KRM's shelter for homeless women and families. Open Arms provides
safe shelter, nutritious meals and Bible-based programs
addressing the underlying causes of homelessness, such as
substance abuse, incomplete education and lack of adequate life
skills.
Revenue: Walk revenue comes from
corporate and individual sponsors. Walkers solicit donations to
sponsor their participation. In eight years, the walk has raised
over $412,000. The goal for 2010 is $80,000
What if I can't walk? Put a sign in your yard advertising the
Walk and come join us for breakfast at Grace United Methodist
Church, across from the Mission. For a freewill donation,
breakfast will be available from 8: 00 am - 10:00 am.
